How to Become Enlightened

INTRODUCTION

We are born into a world of delusion. From the moment one takes ones first breath, one is besieged with strange sensory data pouring into ones newborn self. One immediately begins to discriminate this data to find meaning in what would otherwise be a meaningless world. Sadly, one is not born enlightened, but born into what appears to be complete confusion. One is born unknowing of ones origin. One is born unknowing of why one is alive. One is born unknowing of where one is and where one is going. One may have many questions about life and the world, but the world of delusion in which one lives will not provide one with the answers one seeks.

In this deluded world there are many religious dogmas all claiming to be the one and only truth. Yet, in order not to offend anyone, society shuns any public display of religious beliefs. The result is a society which seems heartless and transparent, and a world which seems cold and lonely, filled with people hungry for truth. One might think there isn't any, or any one, answer. It would seem it is up to each one of us, individually, to find the truth we seek for ourselves.

Why are there so many religions? Can there be so many gods? Of course not. Most people never seek enlightenment for themselves, they blindly follow what they believe to be enlightened leaders or enlightened scriptures. Most people do not even understand what they themselves believe. Those seeking enlightenment, however, need not have blind faith for they are finding the truth themselves. It is a truth each will find should one choose to look for it. The truth is real and will bring one great joy, gladness, happiness, and liberation. The only thing that separates the lost from the enlightened is a thirst for truth. Anyone who truly seeks the way will find the way.

Finding the truth is like solving a jigsaw puzzle with the pieces scattered everywhere. Each piece one finds releases some pain one has been ignorantly harboring inside of oneself. If one gathers enough pieces, one begins to see the overall picture called "the truth of God." When one grasps the truth, one is reborn spiritually into God's kingdom. One is never the same again, for once one knows the truth, one always knows the truth. Perhaps, right now, you are thinking, "There is no absolute truth!" Oh really, do you believe that, absolutely?

This book assumes, of course, that God does indeed exist. After all, if God does not exist, and the Universe and all of life is just an "accident" created by "random chance", then our lives are basically meaningless ending in nonexistence. If there is no God then anything goes and nothing really matters. What is the point of even reading this book if you know that you, your memories, and all of your knowledge is going to be destroyed by the fires of random chance from which you sprang inevitably?

If life is an accident, then you are accidently reading this book which was created by "accident". I am not trying to prove the existence of God by explaining how atrocious, meaningless, and temporary life is without God. In fact, only God can prove God's existence. However, without God, life does seem to be quite vicious, pointless, and desperate. In fact, life seems hopeless. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that absense of evidence is not evidence of absense. It would appear to be as difficult to prove that God exists as it is to prove that God doesn't exist!

If there is no God, there really is no reason for any moral behavior other than to avoid the consequences of man-made laws. After all, who would one answer to except oneself? In a Godless universe, then anything one can get away with is actually O.K!

How can one ever be truly content, knowing everything one does is in vain, and that one will die sooner or later anyway? Without the hope of an afterlife, life is a mad scramble to keep oneself alive as long as one can, but then again, why bother postponing the inevitable? If the whole Universe is an accident, one is delusion incarnate, just a bunch of atoms, if even that, that collectively call themselves "alive".

Now, suppose you yourself are God. If this was the case, then you certainly would not be reading this as you would probably know everything already. You would know why and how you were created. You would know why people have existed before your birth. You would know where you came from. You would know why you and all your friends must die one day. You would know where the Universe came from. If you yourself are God, what exists outside of yourself? If you yourself are God, why doesn't everyone else think that you are God?

Could it be we all have our own idea of God? Is the truth subjective? The idea that truth is subjective flounders in the face of reality. If everyone has their own God or their own idea of God then why are there certain religions with billions of members all seemingly in agreement? Is there an underlying truth? Is there a real God hidden beneath everyone's idea of God? If truth cannot be found, why are so many people willing to give up their lives rather than deny the existence of God?

Is it possible to really believe in God and really not believe in God at the same time? Why is it that so many people doubt the existence of God, but absolutely believe in the Devil? Can there really be one with out the other? Can there be a God without a not-God? Or a not-God without a God? Is it really so much harder to believe in God than it is to believe in life on other planets?

It is the position of this book that God does indeed exist, and that finding and knowing God through enlightenment will bring one great joy, peace, liberty, gladness, contentment, rebirth, and the promise of everlasting life. It would seem that if one was to receive any of these gifts, the receipt itself would be proof of God, for after all, who could give these gifts but God?

What is God anyway? For arguments sake, and as used throughout this book, God is the real and only truth. God is the Ultimate Truth, if you will, regarding everything. To know God is to know the truth, and to know the truth, is to know God. After all, what God is there apart from truth, but a false god?

Each of us has a conscience. We feel guilty when we do something wrong because we know in our hearts that certain things really are wrong. There are crimes that are just plain evil committed every day which bear witness to the objective difference between right and wrong. (I'm sure you can imagine a few.) One has nothing to lose by believing in God, and everything to gain. When it comes down to it, It makes sense to live a life of contentment and hope rather than a discontented, hopeless life.

Suppose you were to say, "I kinda believe in God, but I don't really think much about it." How can you not take a stand on the single most important decision in your life? To never decide if you believe in God or not, is to live your life in "neutral". Why live your life in neutral? Either believe there is a God or believe there isn't. One can't "kinda" believe anything. Unresolved decisions and believing in contradictory thoughts are sources of discontentment. Open your heart and your mind. Make a decision! Put your life in gear! Read on! Who knows, you just may become enlightened!

We are all related.
